Patton School Counseling ProgramCounselors in Texas provide the following:
A school counselor works with the school faculty and staff, students, parents, and the community to plan, implement, and evaluate a developmental guidance and counseling program including: (1) Core Counseling Lessons: Counseling lessons are a time when the school counselor visits homeroom classes and teaches a lesson to all students. Preventative in nature, lessons address bullying, personal safety, career, and other topics to enhance personal and social growth throughout their elementary school experience. Lessons at Patton are delivered to each homeroom class on a three week rotation. (2) Responsive Services: Responsive services include intervention on behalf of any student whose immediate personal concerns or problems put the student's continued educational, career, personal, or social development at risk. This might look like meeting with students on a (short-term) individual or group basis. This also includes intervention during a crisis and the administration of a risk-assessment when deemed necessary (as defined by AISD standards). (3) Individual Planning: School Counselors meet with students to help them develop an individual planning system to guide the student as the student plans, monitors, and manages the student's own educational, career, personal, and social development. (4) Systems Support: Counselors provide system support to reinforce the efforts of teachers, staff, parents, and other members of the community in promoting the educational, career, personal, and social development of students. In Austin Independent School District, School counselors provide the following tiers of support: Tier One - reaches 100% of students
All counselors are required to maintain confidentiality. This means that everything a students tells a counselor remains confidential unless the counselor becomes worried about their safety. This means we are worried about someone hurting them, them hurting someone else, or them hurting themselves. In any of these events, we will notify the appropriate party as quickly as possible. Often students are happy to allow us to share with parents and teachers on their behalf for things that are difficult to communicate. However, this is only done with expressed permission. |
